For people in Europe, alternatives to YNAB include Grassfeld, a Dutch budgeting app that connects current accounts at banks across the Netherlands and the rest of the EU.
Budgeting method
Limits and notifications: You set a general limit plus limits per category. The app notifies you when you are approaching a limit (for example, when you have spent 80% of your “Food & Drinks” category) and again when a category reaches its limit, so you can adjust in time.
Recurring budgets. Budgets follow your budget periods, and recurring transactions such as rent or subscriptions can be tracked automatically. Just mark a transaction as recurring and set daily, weekly, monthly, yearly or a custom schedule.
Analytics per budget. For each budget you can see how much you have spent per category compared to your limit, with the number of transactions and the percentage used. The Periods report shows your past budget months in one overview, so you can spot patterns and adjust.
Future predictions. Grassfeld doesn’t just look back. Future predictions learn your habits and warn you about potential overspending before it happens, and can suggest a limit increase if you are likely to exceed your budget. This feature is available only on Premium+ subscription.
Shared budgets. You can share budgets, goals and accounts with a partner or family member, either in whole or in part, and choose between editing rights and view-only access. This gives you one unified view of your household finances. This feature is available only on Premium+ subscription.
Full control over transactions. Hide any transaction from analytics when you don’t want it to count towards your budget. You can restore it at any time.
Setup effort: Grassfeld works straight from the app store. You download the app, connect your bank, and your transactions come in on their own, so there is no need to set everything up from scratch. You can also personalise your budgets and goals to fit your needs.
European bank coverage
You can sync your bank so you don’t have to enter all your data manually. Grassfeld supports all major banks in the Netherlands, the rest of the EU, and North America (USA and Canada).
When it comes to connecting a credit card everything depends on your bank. Savings accounts however often cannot be linked automatically in the EU because of general regulations. In any case, you can add a savings account as a manual account and import its data as a .csv or .excel file, and you can still set up savings goals in the app.
Pricing
Grassfeld Light: €1.99 billed monthly, or €21.99 billed annually (€1.83 per month). It comes with a 14-day trial and includes budgets, savings goals, debts and loans, and one connected bank account.
Grassfeld Premium+: €3.99 billed monthly, or €43.99 billed annually (€3.66 per month). There is no 14-day trial. It includes everything in Light, plus advanced analytics, unlimited financial reports, shared budgets and goals, and unlimited linked bank accounts.
